Tributes have been paid to a former Coronation Street and Cold Feet actress who tragically passed away at the age of 39 on Sunday.
Also a former Miss Wales, winning the competition in 1997, Melanie Hughes was described by her husband Rick, aged 49 as a “lovely soul” who was “kind and gentle“.
“Mel was so kindhearted and had time for absolutely everyone.” he added.
“We are absolutely devastated at the loss of such a wonderful spirit and will never ever forget her.”
He added that the family has been left in total shock by Melanie’s death.
The actress was also a former beauty queen and won the title of Miss Wales back in 1997.
However, over the past 15 years, she has been working at an energy conservation company in Greenfield. Her co-workers have also been left devastated by the death.
Melanie’s family have since claimed that her death was completely unexpected and has left her three-year-old son, Kaden confused by her sudden disappearance.
Rick went on to say that the toddler “doted on his mummy“.
“He is asking where mummy is.” he added.
Melanie was also the stepmother to Rick’s 16-year-old son, Taylor.
Despite the circumstances, Rick stated that the couple made the most of their time together and have not long returned from a family holiday to Florida:
“We had a holiday of a lifetime two months ago in Disney World Florida with my family and I am so glad we did as that has so many pictures with so many memories.”
“Mel was better looking than all the Disney Princesses and she will always be my Miss Wales.”
Melanie and Rick grew up together in Holywell and even attended the same high school. Despite knowing each other for the majority of their lives, the pair only got into a relationship 10 years ago.
Discussing the early days of their romance, Rick said:
“We got engaged at the Trevi Fountain in Rome a few years later and married in June 2011 at Greenfield Church. The honeymoon was in Mauritius where Mel’s mum, Jotee, is from and obviously all of Jotee’s family.
Mel had never been to Mauritius, so (it) made perfect sense to have our honeymoon there. We stayed at a hotel but had different days meeting Mel’s beautiful Mauritian family who she had never met.”
“It’s an experience I will treasure.”
The cause of death is not yet known, but North East Wales coroner John Gittins has been informed.
